Shiv

West Coast Premiere, Boston Court, 2015

Shiv is given a sensuous, mesmerizing and thoroughly thought-provoking production at The Theatre @ Boston Court in Pasadena. Those daring to see it should be prepared to think, feel, and reflect on whatever part of life’s path one is currently treading. Director Emilie Beck, her cast and her design team enhance the possibilities.

-Dany Margolies, The Daily News

A deeply political play that prefers to suggest that its ideas are more subliminal than analytical, Shiv totes its heavy baggage with a doggedly gossamer touch, incarnated not merely by Jolly’s gamine pluck…but also the resourceful invention of Emilie Beck’s direction.
Beck lends the piece a determined sense of play that shrewdly synthesizes the profuse patterns of images and metaphors into a delightful series of highly concrete props that drop from above the stage on wires: This defines the claustrophobia of Shiv’s condition while opening it up to the possibility of endless invention.

-Myron Meisel, Stage Raw

A preview of SHIV, by Aditi Brennan Kapil. Playing through August 9th The Theatre @ Boston Court in Pasadena. This post-Colonial fantasy loosely based on Shiva, the Hindu destroyer god, explores a vividly rendered relationship between a girl becoming a young American woman and the South Asian poet father who inspires and eventually disappoints her. By turns poetic, metaphysical, and richly human, the play paints a compelling portrait of how challenging it is to be an immigrant in a new country where all the rules are different.
